Who We Are

A small white church with a wooden porch, surrounded by trees, with a few people and musical equipment on the porch.

A community rooted in love, formed by beauty, and sent into the world with hope.

Saint Cecilia's began with a dream implanted by the Holy Spirit in the mind of Father Bill Miller as he sat in his study praying and being open to God's leading back in the Spring of 2021.

"Plant a church, a creative, music-oriented church that can speak powerfully to a diverse group of people, in Round Top!" One of Father Bill's best friends, Michael Soper, had recently purchased a ranch just up the road from the chapel, and Father Bill had just officiated a wedding of a good friend - in the Haw Creek Chapel in Henkel Square!  Though Father Bill had been a finalist to become the Dean of the Cathedral in Memphis and was happily ministering to the growing and thriving congregation of Christ Church Covington, near New Orleans, he sensed a real call to Round Top. The Episcopal Diocese of Texas had already been in touch with Father Bill about another church seeking his candidacy in the Diocese, but that was not a good fit. So he shared with the Diocesan transition officer: "Here's a crazy idea! What if we plant a church in Round Top?!"

As it turned out, though a bold vision, it was not so crazy, and seemed directed by the Holy Spirit. Father Bill was asked to complete a testing process that all church planters undergo, to see if he had the temperament and the gifts to be a church planter (a specialized ministry for sure). Turns out he did!  He shared with Bishop Doyle, as the last step in the process for approval that he thought this idea of a creative church plant in Round Top "could work."  Bishop Doyle, responded: "We don't know if it will work or not, but we're going to try it with you!" It was a true leap of faith for priest, Bishop and Diocese!

After meeting with the Massey family and getting their blessing to use the historic Haw Creek Chapel, Saint Cecilia's launched in early October 2021 with a Saturday evening Reception with music provided by Dolly Parton's former guitarist (who happened to be living in Brenham) and the next day offered an Animal Blessing in the Square with music provided by the Black Cat Choir. The next Sunday was the first Sunday morning service at Saint Cecilia's with 28 in attendance. Joey McGee had been recruited as Saint Cecilia's first musician. A dynamic, unique community of faith was born!

Within one year, the service outgrew the chapel and a second service was added. For special services such as the Willie Nelson Mass and Easter, alternative sights began to be used such as the outdoor courtyard in Henkel Square, the historic Round Top Dance Hall, the Rifle Hall, the Compound and the Bates Chapel at Festival Hill. For a special Christmas Concert for Peace, the Concert Hall at Festival Hill was filled to capacity! Almost immediately a Planning Committee was formed to find the right property on which to build a new, larger worship space. The property was found and secured near the Junk Gypsy on 237 and the church's ambitious New Song Campaign raised over 2.6 million dollars in pledges, with a grant and a favorable loan secured from the Great Commission Foundation of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas.

A groundbreaking was held in late January of 2026 and construction will begin in the summer of 2026. Saint Cecilia's is grateful to the Diocese of Texas for its ongoing financial support and for our extraordinary members who so generously make mission and ministry possible. The future of Saint Cecilia's is bright!

What Guides Us

Saint Cecilia’s is a growing spiritual community gathered each Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in the historic Haw Creek Chapel at Henkel Square, in the heart of Round Top, Texas. Situated midway between Houston and Austin, Round Top is known for its internationally celebrated antique festival, its vibrant community of designers and artists, and the Round Top Festival Institute. For those unable to join us in person, a recorded service is made available online each week.

Named for Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, our church honors the creative spirit as a gift of God. We celebrate the work of musicians, artists, and makers of every kind, trusting that beauty is not ornamental to faith but integral to it. Ours is an open and inclusive community that proclaims God’s love to all people, without exception, and affirms the goodness of creation in all its forms.

We are part of the Episcopal Church, within the worldwide Anglican Communion. Our tradition draws on scripture, tradition, reason, and lived experience as we seek to follow Christ with both intellectual integrity and spiritual depth. We believe that love is the measure of authentic faith. If it is not about love, it is not about God.

We also offer a unique concert and literary series that celebrates artists, musicians, and writers, along with collaborative worship services that highlight the distinctive gifts of guest musicians. We are especially mindful of the rich and diverse musical traditions of Texas, honoring the ways faith and culture are carried in song.
